10 Advancement

Experience Points

Characters advance by gaining Experience Points.

Experience Points are awarded for:

  • Recovering treasure: 1 XP per silver piece worth of treasure.
  • Defeating monsters: 25 XP per level of the monster.
  • Discoveries: Characters gain 50 XP for minor discoveries and 100 XP for major discoveries.

Once characters return from adventure to a safe place, usually a town of some kind, the total amount of gained Experience Points gets divided by the number of surviving characters. Each character gains that number of Experience Points.

The number of Experience Points necessary to reach the next level is 1000 x Level, so 2000 for second level, 3000 for third level and so on.

Leveling Up

Training Points: When characters level up, they gain a Training Point. They can spend this Point to:

  • Learn a new Talent. This requires finding (and potentially paying) a trainer that can teach them the talent.
  • Learn Spells: The character can learn two new Spells. This requires the Magic-User talent. Spells are usually taught by other Magic-Users or learned from Libraries.

The training usually takes 1 to 4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the talent or spells learned.

Health and Stamina: The characters Health increases by 1 when leveling up.
Their Stamina increases by 1d6 points.

Expertise: Every three levels (3, 6, 9, ...) the character gains an additional field of Expertise. They may work with the Referee to find a field that makes sense, given the past experiences of the character. Alternatively, they can gain Mastery in a field where they already have Expertise, increasing the bonus gained to +2.

Restricting Experience (Optional Rule): The referee can decide that characters cannot gain more than one level for one adventure. Any Experience Points over the amount required to reach the next level get discarded.

Discoveries

Characters are awarded experience points for discovering secret locations, hidden lore or other features of the world. These discoveries are categorized as Minor or Major by the referee.
